3M has rigged the game a little when it comes to using their Scotch Weld Glue Sticks. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and only work in 3M guns locking you into a product unless you are willing to purchase a new, non-3M, glue gun. Within the 3M line of products, finding the correct glue sticks to match your 3M Applicator (glue gun) can be a bit of a struggle. The key factors you need to know when selecting your glue sticks are the size and temperature that match your gun. If you are using a LT (Low Temperature) Applicator it needs to be used with LM (Low Melt) adhesive.
Check out our quick reference guide below for what 3M glue sticks your 3M Applicator needs.
3M Applicator (Glue Gun): (adhesive size & temperature)
Low Temperature Glue Guns
Standard Temperature Glue Guns
Multi-Temperature Glue Gun
For example, if I am using my 3M Scotch-Weld Hot Melt Applicator LT I need to purchase adhesive size TC (5/8 x 2) that are LM (Low Melt). The products offered in TC and LM are 3755LM, 3762LM, 3792LM, 3798LM. If I am using my 3M Scotch-Weld Hot Melt Applicator AE II I would need size AE (1/2 x 12). The AE II glue gun allows you to use any standard 1/2" or 7/16" glue sticks.
*An exception is 3M Scotch-Weld Hot Melt Applicator EC, which can work with both low melt (LM) and standard hot melt, so I could use either temperature adhesive as long as it is size Q (5/8 x 8). The EC applicator from 3M has 5 different temperature modules check out the information below for the hot melt sticks you can use with each temperature module. 3M Scotch Weld Standard and Low Melt Q & LMQ series hot melt sticks (5/8" X 8") Temperature Module 1: 3762 LMQ, 3776 LMQ, 3792 LMQ Temperature Module 2: 3762 LMQ, 3776 LMQ, 3792 LMQ Temperature Module 3: 3762 Q Temperature Module 4: 3738 Q, 3747 Q, 3748 Q, 3748 V-O Q, 3764 Q, 3792 Q Temperature Module 5: 3731 Q, 3779 Q, 3789 Q
Still struggling to figure out which adhesives work with your gun? We have created a easy reference chart to help you find the correct 3M adhesives for your 3M applicator. Click link below:
Amorphous Poly-Alpha-Olefin (APAO / APO) bulk hot melt is a non-crystalline adhesive that is soft, tacky and flexible. APAO hot melts offer a long open time from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. Their low polarity makes them ideal for bonding polyolefin substrates like PP (polypropylene), PE (polyethylene) and PET (polyethylene terephthalate) along with non-woven materials. APAO bulk hot melt offers a higher heat resistance and increased fuel, acid or chemical resistance compared to an EVA hot melt. APAO adhesives offer a better adhesion in low temperatures than a EVA. Many APAO hot melt adhesives are sprayable, which allow you to cover a large area without a problem, great for product assembly applications.
Hotmelt.com is happy to help you find the correct adhesive for your application. Manufacturers don't always state what type of hot melt adhesive their formulas are making it difficult to find an APAO. If you are thinking an APAO is correct for your applications call us with questions 877-933-3343.
Top Applications for APAO (APO) Bulk Hot Melt:

A freezer hot melt 1/2" glue stick, we couldn't believe it when we discovered this little gem. Generally, freezer strength hot melt isn't available in anything below a 1 3/4" hot melt slug. These freezer glue sticks have an excellent hot tack and long open time.
Ad Tech Freezer grade hot melt glue slug are a medium setting adhesive. These slugs are perfect for bonding wax-coated cartons. FDA approved for indirect contact with food and can be used in a extrusion or spray gun.
Infinity Melt is a low temperature bulk hot melt that offers excellent freezer resistance. This bulk freezer hot melt works on a wide variety of paper and cardboard/corrugated stocks.
Bulk Pressure sensitive hot melts are used is a wide array of applications. Pressure sensitive adhesives hold two surfaces together solely by contact. To achieve this bond external pressure needs to be applied to the surfaces. Pressure sensitive adhesives can offer a permanently tacky aggressive bond or fugitive glues offer a temporary bond allowing the two materials to be easily separated. PSAs can be used to bond numerous materials like plastic, paper, metal, glass, wood, etc.
Pressure sensitive adhesives are ideal for using in assembly. PSA application doesn't require elaborate equipment and can be easily automated. PSAs save time in production compared to liquid adhesives as they require no setup or long curing time. Using bulk pressure sensitive hot melt all manufacturing to go uninterrupted as adhesion is immediate. No need for screws, rivets, clips, or drilling holes as pressure sensitive adhesives eliminate the need, plus they provide and insulating seal, as well as sound and vibration control.
Bulk pressure sensitive hot melt has a board substrate adhesion. PSA is permanently tacky and repositional. Pressure sensitive hot melt has a long open time allowing you time to situate the subtracts correctly.
Marketing & Packaging
Pressure sensitive hot melt is ideal for marketing applications. Fugitive glue commonly known as gummy glue, peel-able glue or credit card glue. This type of pressure sensitive hot melt is ideal for attaching samples, coupons, & flyers.
Point-of-Purcahse Displays (POP Displays) & Trade Exhibits
Pressure sensitive hot melt is great for bonding foam spaces into 3 dimentional corrugated cardboard POP displayds. Easily attach samples of wood flooring, laminates, foams, fabric, or other materials and small products with pressure sensitive hot melt to dispaly boards. Pressure sensitives make it easy to attach decorations to baskets. Easily bond polystyrene foam and other materials used in counter top displays, jewelry cases, and exhibitor booths.
Other applications for pressure sensitive hot melt: Assembly, Labeling Food Packaging, Bookbinding,
Some specific items that use PSA are diapers, feminine hygiene, appliances, furniture, case & carton sealing, packaging, envelops & shoe manufacturing!
