3M has rigged the game a little when it comes to using their Scotch Weld Glue Sticks. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and only work in 3M guns locking you into a product unless you are willing to purchase a new, non-3M, glue gun. Within the 3M line of products, finding the correct glue sticks to match your 3M Applicator (glue gun) can be a bit of a struggle. The key factors you need to know when selecting your glue sticks are the size and temperature that match your gun. If you are using a LT (Low Temperature) Applicator it needs to be used with LM (Low Melt) adhesive.

For example, if I am using my 3M Scotch-Weld Hot Melt Applicator LT I need to purchase adhesive size TC (5/8 x 2) that are LM (Low Melt). The products offered in TC and LM are 3755LM, 3762LM, 3792LM, 3798LM. If I am using my 3M Scotch-Weld Hot Melt Applicator AE II I would need size AE (1/2 x 12). The AE II glue gun allows you to use any standard 1/2" or 7/16" glue sticks.
*An exception is 3M Scotch-Weld Hot Melt Applicator EC, which can work with both low melt (LM) and standard hot melt, so I could use either temperature adhesive as long as it is size Q (5/8 x 8). Amorphous Poly-Alpha-Olefin (APAO / APO) bulk hot melt is a non-crystalline adhesive that is soft, tacky and flexible. APAO hot melts offer a long open time from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. Their low polarity makes them ideal for bonding polyolefin substrates like PP (polypropylene), PE (polyethylene) and PET (polyethylene terephthalate) along with non-woven materials. APAO bulk hot melt offers a higher heat resistance and increased fuel, acid or chemical resistance compared to an EVA hot melt. APAO adhesives offer a better adhesion in low temperatures than a EVA. Many APAO hot melt adhesives are sprayable, which allow you to cover a large area without a problem, great for product assembly applications.

A freezer hot melt 1/2" glue stick, we couldn't believe it when we discovered this little gem. Generally, freezer strength hot melt isn't available in anything below a 1 3/4" hot melt slug. These freezer glue sticks have an excellent hot tack and long open time.
Ad Tech Freezer grade hot melt glue slug are a medium setting adhesive. These slugs are perfect for bonding wax-coated cartons. FDA approved for indirect contact with food and can be used in a extrusion or spray gun.
Infinity Melt is a low temperature bulk hot melt that offers excellent freezer resistance. This bulk freezer hot melt works on a wide variety of paper and cardboard/corrugated stocks.
Bulk Pressure sensitive hot melts are used is a wide array of applications. Pressure sensitive adhesives hold two surfaces together solely by contact. To achieve this bond external pressure needs to be applied to the surfaces. Pressure sensitive adhesives can offer a permanently tacky aggressive bond or fugitive glues offer a temporary bond allowing the two materials to be easily separated. Plastic is one of the hardest surfaces to bond to but we have found a hot melt glue stick that will bond polyethylene, PVC and PET. This hot melt is commonly used for PE boxes and display units. It has an open time of 28 seconds and a set time of 17 seconds. We have had numerous customers find success in their applications with these sticks and have even put the product to the test in the Hotmelt.com lab.
These Plastic Hot Melt Sticks are a cloudy white in color and come in 1/2" sticks. These glue sticks can be dispensed by any 1/2" standard temperature glue gun. This hot melt is perfect for bonding PP, PE, PET, and PCV and also bonds porous materials.
Plastics also known as synthetic resins made from a wide range of organic polymers that are can be molded into a shape when soft. Our test of these Plastic Hot Melt Sticks used PVC (Polyvinyl chloride), High Density PE (Polyethylene) and PET (Polyethylene terephthalate).
PVC (Polyvinyl chloride): is a thermoplastic that is made up of 43% carbon and 57% chlorine. PVC has excellent fire resistance and has self-extinguishing properties. This plastic is used for garden hoses, electrical wire insulation, vinyl flooring, roof gutter, vinyl flooring, children's doll, wrapping film, etc.
High Density PE (Polyethylene): this thermoplastic material is the most commonly used bottle caps, containers, Tyvek, plastic bags, water pipes, plastic lumber, etc.
PET (Polyethylene terephthalate): this thermoplastic offers a good barrier against oxygen and carbon dioxide. This material is often used for bottled water, trays for oven use, oven foils, fleece, etc.
We definitely stand by these Plastic Hot Melt Sticks by Infinity Melt. During our test we allowed the hot melt to set for one minute before trying to separate anything. It worked best in our test bonding PET to PET. We could not pull the two pieces apart nor twist them apart even with the small amount of hot melt we applied. The PVC and PE has similar results, we found that they did not the pull apart by hand with a small amount, but when twisted broke apart. We decided do a retrial on the PVC and PE with a larger amount of hot melt applied. The 2nd trial proved more successful in the twist test and the thicker plastics actually began to flex before the hot melt gave way.
The Plastics Hot Melt Sticks were successful except when extreme force was applied and the pieces twisted in opposite directions. We do feel that had we cover the area of plastic entirely in hot melt it would have been extremely difficult or impossible to twist apart by hand.
